The MP4 Spotlight is Back on: Ashley Kumlien

5840_133261960609_126826815609_3665831_6215755_nA few weeks ago Ashley Kumlien was our ModelPer4mance Athlete of the Week. Remember when we spotlighted her?

She’s the incredible woman on the 3,200 mile run across the United States to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis.

Well guess what?

She’s still running.

She has less than 100 miles to go until she reaches her finish line in New York.

I know we have a lot of MP4′ers in the New England area so if you get a chance, track her down.

Go out and cheer her on. Run a mile or 10 with her.

Or just pop over to her blog and leave her some MP4 love.

Just prepared to be inspired.

I have a pretty good feeling that if I (and Heather, too, for that matter) lived in the same state as our athlete of the week we’d be MP4-BFF’s IRL (translation: ModelPer4mance Best Fitness Friends In Real Life). This girl is delicious from her spirit to her sport to her personality! You are going to love…

If we asked your coach or training partner to list three words that describe you they would be: Fierce (that one’s for you Jodi!), determined and funny.

What are you training 4?
Nothing specific at the moment. I have been working with the team at MP4 over the last few months to enhance my endurance and performance levels on the ice by utilizing a specialized weightlifting and cardio program.

What is the best nutrition or training tip you’ve ever been given?
What you put in, is what you’re going to get out.

Tell us about your most memorable athletic achievement.
My most memorable athletic achievement just happened on Tuesday night! I was playing in my last summer hockey league game. One of our top goal scorers forgot her hockey pants. I effortlessly suggested she take mine and I’d find a pair to wear. I grabbed my boyfriend’s XL pants and tossed them on. The bottom of the pants fell just shy of the middle of my shin and the top padding which typically sits on your hip, came up underneath my armpit. I literally had to wrap his suspenders around my neck. I was quite the sight to see! I was somewhat reserved, didn’t think I’d be of much help that night because my range of motion was shot. I ended up scoring the winning goal, with 2 minutes left on the clock!

Describe your perfect workout.
I love weightlifting and playing hockey. But hands down, my favorite workout is an early morning run with my dog.

How do you achieve workout/life balance?
This is hard. My life is constantly filled with demands (work, family, friends, and school). It takes lots of planning and organization.

What motivates you on days you don’t feel like working out?
My workouts are my therapy. Regardless if it’s a game or just an easy walk with the dog I need them to function at my best. When I feel like throwing in the towel, I remember how much of a better, sane person I am after I’ve worked out. Without my workouts, everything else is my life is done half-assed.

If you could workout with anyone in the world who would it be and why?
Kas and Seanna. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know these two fabulous ladies over the summer at MP4 boot camp and let me tell you how incredible they are! Kas’s energy and intensity is not only inspiring, it forces me to evaluate my current ability and push harder. Seanna is kindhearted, always cheering me on to finish that last sprint. She even offers to be my partner and workout beside me, despite my immature workout level.

What is your favorite workout accessory? My hockey equipment!

What kitchen gadget can you not live without?
It’s a tie between my Chantal tea kettle and my blender.

What was the last thing you’ve had to eat today? Greek yogurt mixed with protein powder, vanilla almond granola and blackberries.

What book or magazine is on your bedside table?
My current class textbook and Lit, a memoir by Mary Karr.

What beauty product is always in your purse or gym bag? Mascara and lip gloss. My mother always taught me to enhance my girlish features regardless of where I am.

What is the most played song on your iPod?
Otis Taylor – Ten Million Slaves and anything by Toby Keith

The first place you go when you log on to your computer is...
My email and the MP4 blog!

When you’re not working out where can we find you?
Spending time with family and friends. More than likely, running errands with my dog Cash.

What’s your motto?
Fitness – “You have a personal limit, but chances are, it’s nowhere near where you think it is.”

Life – “Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for a friend”

I’d like to give a big shout out to Jess, a previous athlete of the week, for inspiring our athlete of the week.

If we asked your coach or training partner to list three words that describe you they would be: Determined, strong, happy!

What are you training for? Right now I am training to ride (that would be on a bike, using leg power) from Washington, DC to New York City. Its about 300 miles. I am also running a half  marathon & 2 marathons. All in a 6 week span. Should be fun :) The reason I am cycling from DC to NYC is three fold. #1) To celebrate my 31st birthday #2) To raise awareness on childhood obesity #3) To raise funds & awareness for ING Run For Something Better. I’m really excited to be able to use what little athletic talent I have to help kids and kids at heart. You can check more about the project here.

What is the best nutrition or training tip you’ve ever been given? For running, if it seems slow, slow down even more and walk the hills (ultra running has hills and lots of ‘em:)). For nutrition, what you put in your body is how your body will perform. It makes eating junk a lot harder!

Tell us about your most memorable athletic achievement. It would have to be a toss up between running Double Boston Marathon and Learn Horse 100 mile ultra marathon. Both were feats of sheer determination, mind over matter (body!) and focusing on the goal: not to die, aka, finish. I am still in amazement that I ran 100 miles in South Dakota w/ day time temps over 95 degrees and some elevation. I finished in 24 hours, 58 minutes, placing 3rd in my age group and 8 out of 21 women! Double Boston Marathon was equally as challenging. Having just run 3 races prior to another 52.4 miles was not a cake walk! I started with 6 (or 7?) other guys (I was the only women this year) at 5am in Boston at the finish line and ran to the start line in Hopkinton. And the promptly ran back. It took me 11:56, but I got it done! I joked that I should’ve gotten 2 medals :) But even though these athletic achievements are awesome, to me the thing that means more to me is touching the lives of kids, and other people along the way sharing my message of living a healthy, happy and active life. I took a lot of photos with kids along the route on my Double Boston Marathon trip and that was the highlight of the day!

Describe your perfect workout. Oh, that’s hard. A toss up between a 28 mile trail training run, warm yoga or long ride on a perfect Fall day.

How do you achieve workout/life balance? To me living a healthy impacts everything I do. Because I rarely drink/go out, I make time to chill with girl friends, read a book, even take a nap!

What motivates you on days you don’t feel like working out? The next generation. They are our future leaders and right now they are going to be living a shorter life then me. They keep me going. I want to be a positive example to them! I also tell myself that if I don’t get in my training, my races will suffer.

If you could workout with anyone in the world who would it be and why? For cycling it would have to be Lance Armstrong. He is a incredible cyclist! For running I would love to run with Kara Goucher or Deena Kastor. I would love to swim with Dara Torres. I would also like to throw a football with Kurt Warner (he & his wife are great family role models). And perhaps Tom Brady:) If I played tennis it would have to be John Isner.

What is your favorite workout accessory? Well of course my running shoes. That’s the great about running, it always goes with you! Its also a perfect way to visit a town or city. In fact its my favorite thing to do!

What kitchen gadget can you not live without? Blender! It can make healthy smoothies, cold fruit soup and Gazpacho. HMM, good!

What was the last thing you’ve had to eat today? Steel Cuts w/ Hemp Milk and fresh Blackberries. Start your day off right:)

What book or magazine is on your bedside table? (Laughing). Runner’s World and The Last Pick by David McGillivaray

What beauty product is always in your purse or gym bag? Aquaphor in the tiny tubes. It is the BEST lip therapy ever!

What is the most played song on your iPod? I don’t run, cycle or workout with music!

The first place you go when you log on to your computer is…. Email, Twitter (@sarahstanley) and Google Analytics (yes, I am a geek, but a cute geek:))

When you’re not working out where can we find you? When not training, working or working on my charitable causes, I am probably taking a nap!

What’s your motto? My life mission statement is: “How can I be a blessing to someone, somehow, someway, somewhere”. I also like “whatever I do effects someone else” and “Live with passion, live with purpose, live inspired!”

If we asked your coach or training partner to list three words that describe you they would be: Confident, consistent and funny

What are you training 4? To remain a nimble warrior – lol! Seriously, to stay in shape and keep my mind flexible.

What is the best nutrition or training tip you’ve ever been given? Stop training when you’ve injured something. Give yourself time to heal.

Tell us about your most memorable athletic achievement. Appearing on the cover of “50 Athletes Over 50” How boxing and martial arts landed me on the cover of “50 Athletes Over 50 Teach Us to Live a Strong, Healthy Life”

Describe your perfect workout. One hour of training in Muay Thai followed by one hour training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

How do you achieve workout/life balance? I schedule my training and I stay consistent with the days I train. I plan to end my work at a certain time each day to allow me to shift gears and eat before I go. That doesn’t always work, of course. But I make it work at least 3 times a week.

What motivates you on days you don’t feel like working out? If I don’t feel like working out, then I skip class. With martial arts, my full attention is required. I don’t always feel like “fighting”.  A slight lack of attention could result in receiving a boxing glove in the face – lol! I have what I call “girl days”. I honor those feelings and give myself a rest.

If you could workout with anyone in the world who would it be and why? I’m lucky enough to already train with very special people: the fellas of flomac (Florian Martial Arts Center) plus Professor Keith Florian and his brother, UFC fighter, Kenny Florian. What more could I ask for?

What is your favorite workout accessory? My boxing gloves

What kitchen gadget can you not live without? Measuring cups and measuring spoons

What was the last thing you’ve had to eat today? A bowl of porridge with raisins and bananas

What book or magazine is on your bedside table? Neither – I only read online material these days

What beauty product is always in your purse or gym bag? Lipstick

What is the most played song on your iPod? iPod keeps track of these things! It’s “Un jour comme un autre” by Brigitte Bardot, played 129 times.

The first place you go when you log on to your computer is: my blog called thatgirlisfunny  http://thatgirlisfunny.com

When you’re not working out where can we find you? In front of the computer or sitting outside.

What’s your motto? Be decisive! When someone asks you to do something, say yes or say no. Don’t say maybe. Action speaks louder than words. Maybe keeps everyone waiting. Most people when they say maybe – mean no, but they’re hesitant to disappoint people.
